Empowered Clothing BMX Team takes 3rd at Chula Vista Nationals 2011

Empowered Clothing BMX Team takes 3rd Place at

Chula Vista Nationals 2011

The Empowered BMX Team from Arizona traveled all the way to Chula Vista, California on September 30th to compete in the Chula Vista Nationals.  After an amazing performance at the Black Mountain AZ Finals earlier in the month, this young team had already proven it was a force to be reckoned with.

Karen, and Empowered Team Mom, describes the first days, “We had a few thrills on wheels, spills on hills, and gains in the mains!”  It’s was a challenging competition and the Empowered Team was determined to bring home the trophies.

“Pedal With Passion” is the adopted team motto  and that is exactly what these kids did. These kids really know what it takes to be great. Jaime Hart, the dedicated Empowered Team Mom and Team Facilitator says, “Great BMX RIDERS are not great only because of their TECHNIQUE …….they are great because of their PASSION their PRACTICE and DEDICATION! BE EMPOWERED!”

At the end of the weekend the team placed 3rd overall! Almost every rider had a place on the podium. Empowered Clothing is very proud of the Empowered BMX Team and their leaders.

To keep up with Empowered BMX Team “LIKE” them on Facebook!

Passion into Perfection

It was 5:00 PM as we gathered around the boxing commissioner for our final instructions
before heading to our locker rooms. A few of us smirked as we looked around at the
other fighters and noticed we were already missing a few of the night’s “participants”.
It’s funny how someone’s dedication, commitment to training and “passion” are
questioned, as the realization of what could happen in the cage slowly sinks in to
one’s mind. I’m not sure what happened to them….my guess is the build-up, talking,
bragging and pre-fight hype was the easy and fun part. It’s when you finally see your
opponent…only when you see the face and physical attributes of the individual you are
going to fight, does the realization of what can happen in the cage truly sink in. Fighting
is a sport in which you have to be just as ready mentally as you are physically. A lot of
fighters who ignore the mental side of this sport lose before they ever enter the cage.

I knew it was going to be a long night as I headed off to the locker room with the other
fighters in the “blue” corner. I was the amateur main event of the night; the last fight
before the pros entered the cage. Never before have I had to wait so long to fight….never
before had I been forced to sit in the back and allow the nerves to build as other fighters
entered and left the locker room for their fights. I tried my hardest to stay focused, but
almost found this impossible as fighters returned from their matches with huge cuts,
swollen faces and blood on their face. It’s hard to stay positive and focused when you see
individuals, who you had been warming up with all night, return with a blank stare and
with their hopes all but gone.

It had been 5 hours since fighters were required to check in for the fights. I was the next
fight up and was glad the time had finally arrived. Up to this point every fighter coming
out of the locker room I was in had lost. I walked out of locker room and patiently waited
for my opponent’s introductions to be over. Then it was time….It’s almost scary when
you think about it…when you realize that all of the work, time, energy and sacrifices
you’ve made for the last three months will be judged, successful or not, in three rounds of
fighting.

1 minute, 27 seconds after the match started, it was over. Endless hours of training
and preparation summed up in 87 seconds of fighting in front of a few thousand fans. I
calmly walk over to my corner and thank my teammates and sponsors for their support.
Sometimes you win…sometimes you lose… The only thing I guarantee is that I’ve done
all I can entering the cage. As my hand is raised, the belt is put around my waste and I
am announced as the new Champions of the Cage Welterweight Champion, I smile…but
only for a second because now the target is on my back! Back to the gym…back to the
training…it’s only going to get tougher! EMPOWERED!

Our first ASR

This ASR show in August of 2010 marks Empowered Clothing’s first entry into the world of action sports.  We’ve been hard at work since the inception of our brand getting ready for this show.  We are a small group from Phoenix looking to make our mark upon the industry.  Our entry to the action sports industry has started with skateboarding and MMA athletes.  We have already started to sponsor some great athletes that embody the Empowered Clothing way of life.  Empowered Clothing’s mission statement: To empower through positive thinking.  Our clothing line consists of men’s and women’s casual streetwear that is adorned with our artwork along with positive phrases.  Our most popular phrase has been “Live On Purpose”.  In turn we will continue to adapt that phrase to many of the action sports, such as “Ride On Purpose”.  We’d like to make a quick introduction of our team.  Javier Gamboa is the founder of Empowered Clothing.  A former baseball player with 3 great kids is the brains behind Empowered Clothing.  He has come up with most of our phrases, and continues to point the brand in a positive direction.  He wants to create a brand of clothing that parents are proud to have their kids wear, and to be able to inspire others to greatness.  Chuck Crouthamel III is our Co-Owner.  Chuck is the one that keeps us all grounded, and down to earth.  Without Chuck’s direction and input, none of us would be here collaborating to bring you our new brand.  Drew Vertes is our first sales representative.  His positive attitude and ambition are vital to this company’s success.  And last, but not least is myself, Tommy Pierucki.  I am the face of our online presence, handling the architecture of the Empowered community.  From Facebook to Twitter to YouTube to blogging, I will be handling it all.  Empowered Clothing is an idea that I can truly believe in.  Its positive message, and sense of family and community is a can’t miss.  We all look forward to exhibiting at our first ASR show, which will hopefully be the first of many to come.

We cry in the gym, so we can laugh in the cage

So here is my second attempt at allowing some fans an insight to my life and my fight career. At times I might wander off subject so please bear with me. I’ve never been a great writer and blogging is new to me. Empowered Clothing has encouraged me to continue to write so that my fans can see my passion and commitment to the sport I represent. I also can’t thank everyone enough for all of the support that I have received. I’ve only been fighting for a year and it’s awesome to get recognition in this area. When I go and corner, or support, other fighters from our gym I always have quite a few fans come up and ask how training is going, when my next fight is, etc. It’s quite humbling and I hope that this blog post will shed more light on who I am and what I represent.

“Why in the world would you fight? I’ve spent 26 years raising you and you want to mess up that face of yours!” The inspiring words of my concerned mother. (Love you mom) It’s the inevitable question raised by so many people. I probably get asked this question more than any other, in regards to what I do. It’s hard for any person to comprehend why in the world an individual would want to put their self in a situation with such grim outcomes. You almost have to laugh…it’s so hard to explain or justify why we do what we do…why we are so passionate about a sport that is still trying to shed it’s early reputation of being barbaric in nature. I also get a kick out of the stereotypes that we get tagged with: uneducated, redneck, crazy, etc!

I am lucky to have graduated from one of the best colleges in the nation: The University of Oklahoma. I was able to obtain my Masters Degree in Business and now work for a military defense company as a Program Analyst. ( I’ll take this moment to give a big shout out to our military personnel who fight the real war that allows us the privilege to do battle in the cage.) I only reference my education because so many people are so quick to stereotype individuals in our sport. Once again I laugh at the conclusions people jump to and the descriptive terms used to depict fighters. Rarely do their statements hold any truth or fact. I have had the privilege of stepping on the mat with some of the brightest and most intelligent people I have ever met. You have to be smart to be successful in this sport. When I step in the cage every move I make has numerous consequences and possible outcomes. A fighter must be able to process offensive/defensive moves and ADAPT and OVERCOME in an instant. I relate a fight to a chess match…you have to think three or four moves ahead of where you currently are. One wrong move or bad decision can cost you the match regardless of the fact that you were dominating up to that point.

Now back to the million dollar question: “Why?” I’m sure every fighter has a different reason for fighting. Maybe it’s fame; maybe it’s the “rush”, maybe the money? Who knows? All I can do is give you my response. Each result in the cage shows everyone your commitment and dedication to your passion. It truly is a sport that you get what you put in. There is a saying I love: “We cry in the gym so we can laugh in the cage.” This is a sport you can’t do half heartedly. It consumes your life. You can’t workout and train 3 days a week and be successful. You can’t leave any holes in your game or they’ll show. As I stated in my last blog post, when I step in that cage under the lights and it’s just me and my opponent, you’ll see a smile come across my face. I know I’ve done everything I can and have given 100%! I know my opponent can see the time and effort that I’ve devoted in my training and a sense of calmness runs through me….I feel EMPOWERED!

DJ Loveless-Throughout an Individual

Throughout an individual’s life, one will face many challenges. Some of those challenges will be destroyed with a smile on their face…others will have you asking “why?” Some of these challenges you can prepare for….others you can’t. You can tell a lot about a person’s character by how they face these challenges, whether they succeed or not, and how they move forward and learn from the experience.

I’m one of the fortunate people in this world to be a twin. Growing up, my brother and I were like night and day. Looking at us you would never guess, and still to this day people have a hard time believing, that we really are twins. It’s usually proven by pulling out our driver’s license and ends with an “I told you so!” Some of the time my brother denies it all together and the jokes on me.

My twin brother was born with a heart condition and has had multiple open heart surgeries through out his life. He has scars that cover his body and he routinely shows them off and tells everyone he was attacked by bears! He’s a pretty funny guy with jokes….most of the time! Although he could never play sports, he never missed my sporting events. Whether it was football in pouring down rain or a baseball game with 100° heat, he never missed the opportunity to cheer me on. While most individuals, including myself, would feel sorry for their self, my brother has not only lived through this challenge, he has kicked its ass!

Now all of this leads me to a very important phrase that I have trained and lived by for a very long time: Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum. This Latin adage is usually translated as “Peace through Strength. Therefore, he who wishes peace, should prepare for war, he who desires victory, should carefully train his soldiers; he who wants favorable results, should fight relying on skill, not on chance.”

As I stated before, individuals, such as my brother, will face many challenges throughout their life. Most of these challenges they will have no control over. You can’t prepare or control fate!  Therefore the few challenges that I know are inevitable, and I have the opportunity to prepare for, I train for war! Looking back at the meaning behind my motto, you can’t rely on mere luck, you must carefully train and hone your skills. Earn respect by showing others what you’re willing to sacrifice in order to succeed! When I step in that cage under the lights and it’s just me and my opponent, you’ll see a smile come across my face. I know I’ve done everything I can and have given 100%! I know my opponent can see the time and effort that I’ve devoted in my training and a sense of calmness runs through me….I feel EMPOWERED!

Empowered Community

One of the most important parts of starting a new company is building a community, and what we are looking to do is connect with people. Our goal is to show people why and how someone is or was empowered by our mission statement. “To empower through positive thinking.” – Empowered Clothing Mission Statement. Our clothes all have a positive phrase on them. What good is the phrase if we can’t show some empowerment with these great phrases?

The first phrase that we came up with is our most popular. The “Live On Purpose” phrase is the foundation on which this company was built. This phrase has such a great meaning to so many people, and can be interpreted by anyone. “Live On Purpose” stretches across the boundaries of action sports and can be filtered into real, everyday life. Purpose is such a strong word. In our office, we have “Work on Purpose” on our walls as an everyday reminder of what we’re doing and why we are here.

Are you an athlete that lives and trains by one phrase? What inspires you? What keeps your outlook positive? Are you training on purpose? We want to know about it. We want to hear all about it. Whether you tell us in email or video, we want to share your story with the world. Send your response to tommy@empoweredclothing.com. Show us why or how you feel empowered by one of our phrases, or one of your own. Maybe we’ll put it on a t-shirt one day. We want to share your story via Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and more.

Dylan Thomas

Dylan Thomas is all of 13 years old. He is an avid skateboarder, and wanted to be sponsored by somebody. He called around and around to different companies asking for sponsorship. Finally he found us. He called us. Not his mother or father. He called us. He got a hold of Javier. Javier took his phone call and listened to what Dylan had to say. He thought that it was pretty cool that a kid that was only 13 years old was calling around for his own sponsorships. Sponsorship granted. What does Dylan get out of this? He gets his own custom airbrushed deck with his name on it, along with our logo. Pretty cool if you ask me. Take a look at a few photos we took while he was here, and the video we put together.

Dylan had to get in some skating on his first visit to the Empowered office.

Dylan rippin' it!
