Throughout an individual’s life, one will face many challenges. Some of those challenges will be destroyed with a smile on their face…others will have you asking “why?” Some of these challenges you can prepare for….others you can’t. You can tell a lot about a person’s character by how they face these challenges, whether they succeed or not, and how they move forward and learn from the experience.
I’m one of the fortunate people in this world to be a twin. Growing up, my brother and I were like night and day. Looking at us you would never guess, and still to this day people have a hard time believing, that we really are twins. It’s usually proven by pulling out our driver’s license and ends with an “I told you so!” Some of the time my brother denies it all together and the jokes on me.
My twin brother was born with a heart condition and has had multiple open heart surgeries through out his life. He has scars that cover his body and he routinely shows them off and tells everyone he was attacked by bears! He’s a pretty funny guy with jokes….most of the time! Although he could never play sports, he never missed my sporting events. Whether it was football in pouring down rain or a baseball game with 100° heat, he never missed the opportunity to cheer me on. While most individuals, including myself, would feel sorry for their self, my brother has not only lived through this challenge, he has kicked its ass!
Now all of this leads me to a very important phrase that I have trained and lived by for a very long time: Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum. This Latin adage is usually translated as “Peace through Strength. Therefore, he who wishes peace, should prepare for war, he who desires victory, should carefully train his soldiers; he who wants favorable results, should fight relying on skill, not on chance.”
As I stated before, individuals, such as my brother, will face many challenges throughout their life. Most of these challenges they will have no control over. You can’t prepare or control fate! Therefore the few challenges that I know are inevitable, and I have the opportunity to prepare for, I train for war! Looking back at the meaning behind my motto, you can’t rely on mere luck, you must carefully train and hone your skills. Earn respect by showing others what you’re willing to sacrifice in order to succeed! When I step in that cage under the lights and it’s just me and my opponent, you’ll see a smile come across my face. I know I’ve done everything I can and have given 100%! I know my opponent can see the time and effort that I’ve devoted in my training and a sense of calmness runs through me….I feel EMPOWERED!
