Former MLB player Javier Gamboa starts clothing line

Live on purpose: That’s what Javier Gamboa and his clothing line are all about.
The former professional baseball player for the Kansas City Royals spent 10 years in the insurance business after an injury benched him. But after noticing the options for clothes for his three children, he decided to make another career switch.
He said the popular clothes “all had skulls, some type of a gun, some type of pot leaves, brass knuckles. I didn’t feel that my 8-year-old son could wear that stuff, so I created Empowered.”
He teamed with Chuck Crouthamel, a mortgage professional who wanted to help Gamboa realize his dream through financial backing and behind-the-scenes work. They launched the clothing brand in April 2010.
With the help of social media coordination by Tommy Pierucki, they launched their first line and reached more than 4,000 fans on Facebook.
The company, based in Tempe, will come out with a second clothing line this fall.
Clothes can be purchased at empoweredclothing.com. Prices range from $20 to $30, and there are 95 designs in youth to adult sizes.
Gamboa said he sees the brand more as a reflection of his lifestyle than a clothing choice. He sells sportswear in the style he’s always worn, but with a positive message.
Phrases such as “Live on purpose” (the company’s motto), “Live your passion” and “Aspire to inspire” are splashed on T-shirts.
“When they wear those Empowered shirts, they feel that passion,” Gamboa said.
The lifestyle is about being positive and giving yourself the authority to do whatever you want to do, Gamboa said — something he learned a lot about in the past year.
These days, he plays a different role in athletics. While still active in baseball, he now uses the Empowered brand to sponsor young athletes and support local sports teams.
He said he feels fulfilled now, making a difference in the lives of his children and other youth throughout the country.
“The other careers that I had were just kind of making money, living the everyday life everybody else lives,” Gamboa said. “I feel that I was brought in this world to do something great. I believe and I have passion for this brand that I’m going to leave a legacy for this world.”

Women’s Surf Style Magazine Honolulu, Hawaii
Back in August we met the great folks that publish Women’s Surf Style Magazine at the ASR Show in San Diego. Sandra and Dan Olson wandered by our small little booth and struck up a conversation with us. They were such great and positive people! After talking with us for a while, we informed them a little bit about our brand and they told us all about the magazine that they publish. We exchanged information and before you know it, they wanted to take some photos of their models wearing our clothes! We sent Sandra and Dan the items that they requested, and in their next publication our clothes are in the latest issue! Check us out in the Fashion Section for Winter and Spring 2011.
